In 1977, as an 18-year-old amateur, McEnroe won the mixed doubles at the French Open with Mary Carillo and then advanced through the Wimbledon qualifying event and into the main draw, where he was defeated in four sets by Jimmy Connors in the semifinals. He won the NCAA singles title and helped the Stanford team to an NCAA triumph in 1978.

He joined the ATP tour later that year and earned his first professional endorsement deal with Sergio Tacchini.McEnroe and partner Peter Fleming won the Wimbledon Doubles title in 1979, followed by a victory in the US Open Doubles the following year. McEnroe won the men’s singles title in the US Open the following week, his first Grand Slam singles title.

McEnroe’s finest season was 1984 when he went 82–3 in matches, which is still the highest single-season victory rate in the Open Era. He set a career-high with 13 singles titles, including Wimbledon and the US Open, and finished the year as the world’s number one player.
